June 2024 – The Schmitz Cargobull S.KO COOL refrigerated box body semi-trailer, equipped as a standard with the TrailerConnect® telematics system including a digital temperature recorder fitted ex works, has proved itself internationally in temperature-controlled goods transport. Schmitz Cargobull is showcasing further equipment at the IAA 2024 to support the safety of the trailer and freight.

New quiet-running floor – now PIEK-certified

The new multifunctional quiet-running floor is PIEK-certified, extremely quiet and non-slip. Deliveries to urban areas can therefore also be made in the early morning hours as well as in the late evening.

New equipment variant: roller shutter combined with the S.CU mt cooling unit speeds up loading and unloading

The new position of the additional roof evaporator means that a roller shutter can now be incorporated. This results in even greater loading flexibility and speeds up loading and unloading at ramps. The fully foam-insulated cooling unit pipes guarantee end-to-end insulation, providing additional protection from damage. It means that the body is also easier to clean. The repositioning of the auxiliary roof evaporator and the perfectly aligned partition wall avoids the risk of airflow short circuits, ensuring optimum air circulation and meaning that the cargo area can be efficiently used.

Smart and secure functions

TAPA standard-compliant safety equipment

Certification of the safety equipment to TAPA TSR1 standards, the safety standards set out by the Transported Asset Protection Association Trucking Security Requirements (TAPA TSR), has been renewed. In order to meet the exacting requirements for the protection of highly priced and sensitive goods during transport, an alarm and communication system networked in the TrailerConnect® system is integrated, which triggers an audible alarm in the event of unauthorised access to the trailer by third parties. Alongside this audible alarm system, the TL4 electronic door locking system ensures that freights are protected from unauthorised access by third parties. This smart, safe and innovative function enables users to automatically control the door locking system, increasing process and transport safety. This is only available in combination with the Schmitz Cargobull networked TrailerConnect® telematics solution. Users can define loading and unloading locations in the TrailerConnect® portal where the door locking system automatically unlocks the trailer on arrival or locks it when leaving. Geofence-areas only need to be configured once, simply and conveniently in the TrailerConnect® portal. Furthermore, once the trailer door has been closed, a general automatic lock can be activated at the touch of a button in the TrailerConnect® portal or beSmart app.

The Transported Asset Protection Association (TAPA) is an organisation of manufacturers, logistics service providers, freight forwarders and law enforcement authorities, which applies proven methods and procedures to improve the security of valuable assets around the world.

Its goal is to reduce losses in the supply chain. By complying with the TSR1 standards, the Schmitz Cargobull S.KO COOL refrigerated box body semi-trailer complies with the most stringent TAPA requirements.

Schmitz Cargobull EcoPack – aerodynamic storage box for even greater fuel savings

The S.KO refrigerated box body semi-trailer is now equipped with a new aerodynamic storage box, known as the EcoPack – a feature currently available exclusively from Schmitz Cargobull. Thanks to its special aerodynamic design, the box ensures improved air flow, resulting in fuel savings. At the same time, it provides additional storage space, specifically for spare wheels and load securing material. As well as the aerodynamic benefits, the EcoPack also impresses with its low unladen weight and quick, easy handling.

Immobiliser – optional immobiliser for greater safety

The new optional immobiliser protects the trailer from theft or unauthorised movement. Once parked, the immobiliser is activated in a few seconds and the trailer’s wheels are locked. The immobiliser can only be activated or deactivated by the driver on site using a PIN or by a remote user on the TrailerConnect® portal.

New generation of reversing cameras for greater safety and time savings

The new reversing camera simplifies handling for drivers, as the camera offers enhanced safety and simplifies reversing manoeuvres. This avoids damage when approaching narrow ramps. The camera works wirelessly by Bluetooth, so no cable connections are required.

New solar panel

The optional solar panel is located on the roof of the trailer and continuously charges the 12 V starter battery, keeping it operationally ready for a long period of time. This increases the availability of the additional functions supplied with energy from the cooling unit battery, such as the TL4 door locking system. The solar panel can also be used for other manufacturers’ cooling units.

New protective grille in the circulation wall

The protective grille in the circulation wall prevents waste material, leaves or dirt being drawn in by the cooling unit, preventing the cooling unit of the S.KO COOL from becoming dirty. Cleaning is simplified, as dirt no longer gets behind the circulation wall. Instead, it collects on the floor near the circulation wall and can be easily removed. This also minimises major damage, such as fires.

All-electric SKOe COOL refrigerated box body semi-trailer with electric S.CU ep85 cooling unit

Schmitz Cargobull launched the all-electric S.KOe COOL refrigerated box body semi-trailer with electric cooling unit with built-in power electronics, high-voltage battery system and electric generator axle, for the emission-free transport of temperature-controlled freight. The reliability of the entire S.KOe COOL system was confirmed under extreme conditions on a test rig in the climate-wind tunnel. Temperatures of -30 to +50 degrees, high humidity, sunshine with high radiation intensity and rain, snow and ice do not present a problem for the all-electric refrigerated box body. Schmitz Cargobull’s S.KOe COOL is the first all-electric refrigerated box body semi-trailer with type approval. The semi-trailer has the best possible series production factory insulation values. Every trailer is equipped as a standard with the TrailerConnect® control unit including tyre pressure monitoring sensors.

The electrically operated S.CU ep85 cooling unit provides a cooling capacity of up to 15,800 watts and a heating capacity of 10,500 watts, generating the same cooling capacity as a diesel-powered refrigeration unit. Batteries on the landing gear replace the diesel tank and the optimum position of the electrical components ensures effective and normal use of the pallet box. With its battery capacity of 32 kWh, stand-alone electrical operation of 4.5 to 18 hours can be ensured without the need to recharge via the generator axle or the power grid, depending on usage and requirements. Recharging from the power grid is done via the CEE three-phase connector on the cooling unit and takes about two hours.

The payload of the fully electric refrigerated box body with a battery and electric axle is around the same as that of a refrigerated semi-trailer with a diesel unit. The additional weight of the battery of the all-electric refrigerated semi-trailer is almost completely balanced out by the removal of the generator in the cooling unit and the omission of the diesel tank on the semi-trailer.

The electrified and type-approved Schmitz Cargobull generator axle recuperates energy above a certain speed and during braking, and thus extends the operating time of the cooling unit or reduces the charging times of the battery from the power grid. An intelligent battery charging management function ensures that the battery charge level remains as high as possible to provide greater reliability when the vehicle is stationary, e.g. in traffic jams.

Three pre-defined modes (ECO, STANDARD and SAFE) support the complete system of the S.KOe COOL and the trailer can be configured to meet the customer’s conditions of use and objectives. ECO mode ensures maximum energy and cost efficiency during refrigerated transport, STANDARD mode delivers cost-efficient availability of the electric cooling unit, while SAFE mode provides maximum protection in freight transport. The modes can be selected via the display and keypad on the transport cooling unit or via the TrailerConnect® portal and an app.

The generator performance of the electrified axle is precisely matched to the requirements of the cooling unit. The system is fully integrated into the Schmitz Cargobull telematics system so that the respective system status, e.g. battery charging status, remaining range, remaining charging time etc. – can be monitored via the telematics portal.

Schmitz Cargobull is offering a fully integrated one-stop solution with the S.KOe COOL. This is of crucial importance in urban logistics, as many inner-city distribution transport journeys will only be able to be done in so-called “Zero Emission Zones” in many cities from 2025. These trailers are therefore an economical and sustainable solution for emission-free refrigerated transport, without compromising the payload.
